Chapter 21

Maggie arrived at the police station twenty minutes later. She rushed over to the reception desk and said, “I’m Maggie Kelburn. DCI Dexter just phoned me about Delia Chester. Is she okay? What’s happened to her? Where is she?”

The officer behind the desk replied, “I’ll get DCI Dexter for you. Take a seat.” He picked up the phone in front of him.

Maggie didn’t take a seat, and paced up and down in front of the reception desk. She twisted her hands together. What had happened to Delia? Had the person who’d killed her brother decided to go after her too?

DCI Dexter strode towards her. He opened his mouth to speak.

Maggie blurted out, “Is she okay? Where is she?”

The inspector held a hand up to stop her words. “Delia Chester is fine. You can see her in a moment.” He beckoned her over to the far end of the reception desk. Maggie followed him.

DCI Dexter’s voice was quiet as he said, “Delia Chester has been mugged. She’s not hurt, but she’s very shaken up. One of my officers is looking after her.”

“Mugged!” Maggie’s hands flew to her chest. “Where? What was taken? Have you found out who did it?”

“If you keep quiet for a moment, then I’ll tell you.” He gave her a stern look.

“Sorry,” Maggie mumbled.

“Delia Chester was going for a bus near Kirkgate Market when she was mugged. A passerby witnessed the crime and brought her here. Ms Chester has given us as much detail as she can in her shaken state. I offered to take her to the hospital to be checked over, but she refused.” He folded his arms. “She asked for you.”

“Me?”

“Yes. Why would Delia Chester ask for you? Do you know each other?”

“Erm.” Maggie tried to look away, but the inspector’s intense look was pinning her in place.

He went on, “It seems a strange coincidence that the sister of the man who died in your garden is asking for you. Don’t you think? Ms Kelburn, did you know Delia Chester before the death of her brother?”

“No.”

“I see. And how do you know her now?”

“Erm.” Maggie was at a loss for words. Did DCI Dexter know how intimidating his stare was? Did he practise it in the mirror?

“Ms Kelburn, I would like some answers, please. Now.” His look turned smug. “Don’t tell me you’re looking into Harvey Chester’s death on your own? Like some pathetic amateur detective? Been watching too many episodes of Miss Marple, have you?”

His look and tone were enough to bring Maggie out of her stupor. She gave him a defiant look. “I am looking into Harvey’s death as a matter of fact. Delia asked me to. She thinks he was murdered.”

“Does she now?” the inspector said with amusement in his eyes. “Who gave her that idea? You?”

“No. She came to me.” Maggie was about to say Delia had come to her because the police wouldn’t help her, but decided that wasn’t a wise thing to say. “She came to me because Harvey had been receiving death threats on his website and social media accounts.
