Chapter 21
Maggie arrived at the police station twenty minutes later. She rushed over to the reception desk and said, âIâm Maggie Kelburn. DCI Dexter just phoned me about Delia Chester. Is she okay? Whatâs happened to her? Where is she?â
The officer behind the desk replied, âIâll get DCI Dexter for you. Take a seat.â He picked up the phone in front of him.
Maggie didnât take a seat, and paced up and down in front of the reception desk. She twisted her hands together. What had happened to Delia? Had the person whoâd killed her brother decided to go after her too?
DCI Dexter strode towards her. He opened his mouth to speak.
Maggie blurted out, âIs she okay? Where is she?â
The inspector held a hand up to stop her words. âDelia Chester is fine. You can see her in a moment.â He beckoned her over to the far end of the reception desk. Maggie followed him.
DCI Dexterâs voice was quiet as he said, âDelia Chester has been mugged. Sheâs not hurt, but sheâs very shaken up. One of my officers is looking after her.â
âMugged!â Maggieâs hands flew to her chest. âWhere? What was taken? Have you found out who did it?â
âIf you keep quiet for a moment, then Iâll tell you.â He gave her a stern look.
âSorry,â Maggie mumbled.
âDelia Chester was going for a bus near Kirkgate Market when she was mugged. A passerby witnessed the crime and brought her here. Ms Chester has given us as much detail as she can in her shaken state. I offered to take her to the hospital to be checked over, but she refused.â He folded his arms. âShe asked for you.â
âMe?â
âYes. Why would Delia Chester ask for you? Do you know each other?â
âErm.â Maggie tried to look away, but the inspectorâs intense look was pinning her in place.
He went on, âIt seems a strange coincidence that the sister of the man who died in your garden is asking for you. Donât you think? Ms Kelburn, did you know Delia Chester before the death of her brother?â
âNo.â
âI see. And how do you know her now?â
âErm.â Maggie was at a loss for words. Did DCI Dexter know how intimidating his stare was? Did he practise it in the mirror?
âMs Kelburn, I would like some answers, please. Now.â His look turned smug. âDonât tell me youâre looking into Harvey Chesterâs death on your own? Like some pathetic amateur detective? Been watching too many episodes of Miss Marple, have you?â
His look and tone were enough to bring Maggie out of her stupor. She gave him a defiant look. âI am looking into Harveyâs death as a matter of fact. Delia asked me to. She thinks he was murdered.â
âDoes she now?â the inspector said with amusement in his eyes. âWho gave her that idea? You?â
âNo. She came to me.â Maggie was about to say Delia had come to her because the police wouldnât help her, but decided that wasnât a wise thing to say. âShe came to me because Harvey had been receiving death threats on his website and social media accounts.
